I had the opportunity to stay at the Atico Penthouse Cape Town, Fresnaye. It’s a well situated apartment away from the Cape Town CBD, not hidden just there to be seen. What strikes me the most beautiful is that is has a 360 degree view of the whole of the cape, mountains and the harbor is very beautiful. Finding the place is very easy as I only had a map to increase my adventure. On arrival you receive a bottle of wine, biscuits and jam. The concierge was great showing me everything I need to know, even how to use the TV, as If don’t know, but yet she did not ignore it. The concierge was very polite and helpful.

For me as a first time traveler the place was very nice, felt like I was in New York in a high flying penthouse Cape Town. The place has such a great form of décor, the white furniture to the sleek kitchen is really a great style they have went with. Doesn’t matter the time of year, there is  air-conditioning for cold winters days, my reaction was popcorn and a movie.  The appliances is so easy to use, they give you all you need and more, like a dish washer, have never used one, made it great. As I was one person I decided to be spontaneous, slept one night in the master and one in the guest just to feel up there. The décor in the rooms is very simple but yet classy. It’s so peaceful and put you in the right frame of mind, until you go upstairs…

There is an 8 seater Jacuzzi, I am one person, must I tell you the ball I had in there, felt like a kid in a candy store, just one problem there was no candy but loved it. What makes the upstairs different to many penthouses you would see, there is an upper level that can see the city. There is a Weber for a barbeque or as you like to say “Braai” you can have sundowners looking at the mountain area or just turn around and gaze into the horizon.

On an average Friday night, I was invited out with some friends. Not knowing where we were going, we landed up in Rosebank, yes there is a Rosebank in Cape Town. The friends I was with booked us a table at Alma Cafe. I had never been there before so it was a great way to see something new.

A cafe / supply store by day, and an awesome musical venue by night, this spot was one of a kind!

Something that I found interesting was that there were no menu’s, but that didn’t mean they were without food! Greeted by the most friendly staff, we sat down and ordered our drinks, as well as the meal of the day, which happened to be the most divine beef burgers you would ever taste! We dined and chatted while we waited for the headlining act – Sixgun Gospel.

For the first time hearing this band, I have to say they blew me away! From the amazing guitar / banjo playing skills, to the beautiful voice of their lead singer – Danieyella Rodin – they were one of a kind. From playing blues style music, to getting the audience to join along in some old hits, they blew the crowd away. Their Harmonica player – Murray Hunter – was out of this world! He felt every note he played with so much feeling, we could feel his emotion.

Being a musician myself in a band called Brynmor, I was amazed at the versatility of all the band members, and how tight they played together. It’s hard to find talent like this anymore in the South African music scene and I hope they go far!

Now Richard , the owner of the cafe, does the mixing of the amazing sound and boy does he do a good job. Filling in vocally for some male harmonies, he surprised us all, and I have to say,  he’s quite talented.

Overall, I was really impressed with the attitude of the venue and it’s staff, prices are very good, and I would recommend this venue to anyone traveling to Cape Town on holiday for something different. I will definitely go back there soon, just to experience some more local musical talent.
